Delays between booking and receiving appointments; inadequate clinical investigation; lack of management control; poor quality of communications between hospital specialists and general practitioners - these and other findings led the authors to raise some challenging and fundamental questions about the present and future role of out-patient clinics within the framework of comprehensive medical care which the National Health Service seeks to provide.
